Lyttelton’s Newest Building
The Waterfront Industry Commission’s new administration block was officially opened last evening by Mr A. E. Bockett, Waterfront Industry Commissioner. The two-storey building, in front of the Watersiders’ hall, is of reinforced concrete with precast panels. It has a large area of glass. The interior of the heated building is of teak panelling and there are acoustic tiles in the ceiling to reduce noise. The architects were Messrs Holliss and Leonard, of Christchurch. Wilkins and Davies, Ltd., built the building for £42,588. At the official opening Mr Bockett said it was a “redletter day” for the Lyttelton staff. “They had worked for 25 years in very unsatisfactory conditions,” he said. In the 1940 s they shared accommodation with the watersiders in the old Coronation Hall. Later they had accommodation in the Canterbury Hotel building and till now had occupied offices in the Post Office.
The picture shows Mr E. W. O’Brien, Lyttelton branch manager of the Commission, Mr Bockett, and Mr Holliss.
