Hoax By Students

Two students dressed in white coats on Sunday posed as Health Department officers and insisted that 250 students and staff at Lincoln College line up and wash their hands in disinfectant as a precaution against hepatitis.

One of the students who perpetrated the hoax said yesterday it had been done as a joke, “and to teach them all a lesson in personal hygiene.” The student, who is from the University of Canterbury, and who wants to remain anonymous, yesterday described arriving by car at Lincoln

on Sunday just before the midday meal. Two buckets, water, disinfectant and towels were provided, he said, and all those filing into dinner were asked to rinse their hands in the buckets and dry them. “We had placards reading: ‘Hepatitis control; please co-operate’,” the student said. “Towels were provided by the matron, and some people complained about the same towel being used several times.” He said there were several staff members in the queue, as well as some meat inspectors on a short course.

The reaction of the Christchurch district Medical Officer of Health (Dr. L. F. Jepson): “I did hear of it when I visited the college today; they did no harm.”
