Closer Link Between School Inspectors
The retiring district senior inspector of secondary schools in the South Island (Mr M. Hewitson), who will become Director of secondary education this week, said that in lhe last four years he had valued most the close relationship between primary and secondary inspectors. This had led to combined meetings on various subjects of the curriculum in which inspectors and teachers of primary, intermediate, and
secondary schools were involved. Another gratifying development was the closer relationship between secondary schools and the universities, particularly in Canterbury. Inspectors had been brought into discussions on university entrance, bursary, and scholarship examination revisions, a teaching fellowship in chemistry had been established, and the university had given great co-operation in new proposals for the training of teachers in Christchurch. Mr Hewitson said other satisfying developments were the establishment in Christchurch of two vocational classes in which pupils with learning problems had normal school life but went out for work experience in industry; the success of the form 1 to 6 high schools at Geraldine and Tokomairiro (Milton); the translation of former district high schools into Inangahua College, Temuka High School, and Central Southland College; and the smooth amalgamations of secondary and technical high schools into Ashburton College and Hagley High School.
