UNEXPECTED FAILURES

Confusion At Randwick (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) SYDNEY. Failures by three New Zea-land-bred horses on Saturday has thrown bookmakers and punters with eyes on the first big handicap of the season—the A.J.C. Metropolitan on October I—into1 —into complete confusion. Bookmakers rewrote their charts for the £NZI6,OOO Metropolitan, to be run over 13 furlongs at Randwick, after High Principle and Prince Grant had crashed at Randwick, and Argentina at Newcastle. From the confusion, three of Saturday’s winners, Trevors. Duo and the New Zealand-bred Clovelly, have come right into Metropolitan calculations, qnd a new favourite has emerged— Tea Biscuit, which did not race yesterday. Tea Biscuit is now 3/1 favourite for the race, with the earlier favourite, High Principle, now on the second mark. The day’s racing did nothing to alter everyone’s impression that the crack New Zealand mare, Chantal, has the one-mile Epsom, second leg of the A.J.C. spring double, which win be run on October 3, in her keeping. Chantal, which did not run on Saturday, remains a hot 2/1 favourite for the race, with Tobin Bronze, which won well at Flemington, Winfreux and the New Zealand-bred Galilee on the second mark. Trevors, which downed Prince Grant at Randwick on Saturday, has firmed to third favourite.
