NEWS MEDIA ACT

Opposition By Journalists (N Z. Press Association) BLENHEIM, Sept. 11. The Journalists' Association would support the private petition to Parliament seeking repeal of parts of the News Media Ownership Act, the president (Mr B. R. Gridley) told the annual conference of the association in Blenheim. Mr Gridley said that the association’s council had decided to support the petition by a journalist, Mr D. Campbell, but not on the same terms as Mr Campbell. Mr Gridley said the association had a verbal assurance from the Labour Party that if it attained power at the general election this year, it would repeal the act. Those who contributed to an appeal for funds to establish a post-graduate course in public communications will be congratulated by the association.

The contributors are The Newspaper Proprietors’ Association (£1000), “The Press” (£900), the “Christchurch Star” (£900), and the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation (£3000). The motion was approved on voices, with the president, Mr B. R. Gridley, speaking against it. The Journalists’ Association has given £lOO.
