Obituary MR G. H. CHAPMAN

Mr George Herbert Chapman, prominent for much of his life in sawmilling on the West Coast and in service to the community, died at his home at Nelson recently. He was 88. Mr Chapman served on the Westland Hospital Board, the Hokitika Harbour Board, the Arthur’s Pass National Park Board, and the Westland and Nelson Acclimatisation Societies. He was a life member of the Nelson society. He was born at Fernside, North Canterbury, in 1878, and was educated at the Christchurch Boys’ High School.

He was managing director of Stuart and Chapman, Ltd., became a director of Kaniere Hokitika Sawmills, Ltd., chairman of directors of Air Travel (N.Z.), Ltd., and chairman of directors of Nelson Pine Forests, Ltd. He was a life member of the Nelson Bowling Club and president of the Hokitika Golf Club.

He Is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs W. Duffill, of Dunedin, and a son, Mr V. Chapman, of Christchurch.
