Plane Misses Landing Strip
(From Our Own Reporter)
GREYMOUTH, Aug. 26.
A Piper Cub aircraft missed the narrow landing strip at Okuru, South Westland, yesterday and damage was done to the propeller and undercarriage. The owner-pilot, Mr A. Hawker, escaped injury. Mr Hawker had collected venison at Cascade Point and was returning to Haast when he noticed smoke coming from the engine. Finding it impossible to make a forced landing because of high winds he headed for Okuru where there is an emergency strip. He missed this however, when the rudder wire broke and the aircraft slid along the paddock. It is thought that the smoke was caused by an electrical fault which finally burnt the rudder cable.
