TEACHERS NEEDED
New Niuean High School
“Secondary »chool teachers are wanted for the new high school on Niue Island,’’ said the Officer for Islands Educa tion (Mr F. R. J. Davies).
“The present high school, during the last few years, has become too small for the growing number of pupils, and a new school is being constructed on a 12-acre site, about a mile and a half inland from the main town of Aioli,” he said. “Twelve classrooms have already been built, and two science laboratories, technical classrooms, and a library and administration block will be completed before the end of this year. There will also be spacious sports and recreation grounds.
“The present high school will be used, at the end of this year, by the Tuaka Primary School, which serves the Alofi area and which was the first Government school on Niue."
A shortage of good secondary school teachers was one of his main problems, said Mr Davies. There were only a few Niuean secondary school teachers, and more would not be available until those at present studying at New Zealand secr idary schools finished their full training and returned to Niue. “In the meantime there is a great lack of suitable teachers applying for the positions advertised in New Zealand,” said Mr Davies. "Teaching in Niue offers a great chance to young teachers to see something of the way of life of these New Zealand citizens who do not live in New Zealand. It is also a chance for others to lead busy and purposeful lives in a Polynesian setting as opposed to the stress and strain of city life,” Mr Davies said.
