Judge Approves Of Curly Tops
Hairdressing is one of the most plastic of the art forms. This pliancy was the most noticeable feature when hairdressing competitions were held on Saturday by the Canterbury, Westland, Nelson and Marlborough Ladies’ Hairdressers’ Association.
From morning until late afternoon, contestants in five sections were hard at work transforming the lank wet hair of their models into temporary works of art.
It seemed a pity that all the work would be undone within a few hours.
In spite of the pre-contest rush and excitement, entrants had ensured that their own hair was freshly set in a wide range of styles. During the day a large crowd, mostly women, watched the entrants at work. The contest also attracted two long-haired young men, who took a keen interest in the proceedings. The senior judge (Mr C. Chard, of Napier) said he had found a good standard of hair styling in Christchurch and was impressed by the beautiful colouring. The trend at present was toward styles with movement and curly tops and he was pleased to see it followed at the competitions. However there was still too much backcombing and he advised h. !r--dressers not to encourage it. “The majority of hairdressers do not realise that our business is really permanent waving. It is our business to sell permanent waves and if we can sell curly tops, that’s all to the good.” he said.
Visitors, contestants and models were welcomed by the president of the association (Mr B. Jones) and the competitions were opened by the Mayor (Mr G. Manning). Results:—
