Doctor Barry Loses Chance At Start
Golden Oriole graduated to near New Zealand Cup class when she held off the near outsider, Quesnel, in the Louisson Handicap at Addington Raceway on Saturday. The race was noteworthy for the dismal failure of the hot favourite. Doctor Barry, which broke hopelessly at the start and lost all chance.
(Jolden Oriole’s win was her first since last October when, at her first start for the term, she won a sprint race at Addington. Her subsequent form was most disappointing, but much of this was owing first to a cracked rib and then to an infection.

Uteena, closely attended by Break Through, set most of the pace, with Flying Maiden about fourth or fifth until near the straight entrance where Uteena dropped out. Break Through had a short lead over Astralight turning for home, with Flying Maiden making ground next, ahead of Uteena, which broke, Tronso, Fourina. Ardleigh and Queen’s Cord, which was making a big run. Flying Maiden had control just inside the furlong and lasted to win by a head from Queen's Cord, which met trouble when Le Chant ran into the black of Ardleigh [near the three furlongs. Ardleigh came home gamely for third only half a head back, with a length to Tronso. After a gap came Astralight, with Fourina next, clear of Break Through, which broke at the furlong.
Golden Oriole probably will race next in the National Handicap. an inyitation race over 13 furlongs on the second night of the meeting on Saturday.
£2097 10s in a w’in pool of £4948 10s and £1354 10s in a place pool of £6751, showed dividends o f £1 7s for a win and 17s for a place when offcourse investments were showed on the indicators. His win price subsequently lengthened to about £2. Doctor Barry broke hopelessly at the start and lost more than half a furlong, with Lyndhurst, too. breaking badly. Catcalls greeted Doctor Barry each time he passed through the front straight and again when J. D. Litten returned to the birdcage with him. First And Third The training combination of J. Grant and D. G. Jones gained their second win for the day when Plying Maiden beat Queen's Cord and her stablemate, Ardleigh, in a keen finish to the second leg of the main double, the Christchurch Handicap. The Golden Oriole-Flying Maiden combination returned £32 2s 6d for £l.
Raced by M. A. Butt, a son of her trainer, W. R. Butt, who earlier in the day trained and drove Johnny Gee to win the Intermediate Handicap, Golden Oriole is a five-year-old mare by Local Light from Petulus.
Quesnel, which showed very mixed form last season, made a surprisingly forward showing to finish second. He trailed Van Rush for most of the race, with Golden Oriole close behind him. Quesnel and Bellajily had a short lead racing to the straight, with Bellajily struggling to keep up after being forced four wide on the home turn.
Quesnel was run down by Golden Oriole, which beat him by a short length. Happy Ending battled on for third two lengths and a half away, a length and a half in front of the tiring Bellajily. Terrace Dale was half a head away fifth, well clear of Peel and Space Cadet. Doctor Barry, which carried
