Hilton Highway
(From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, August 21. If a works committee recommendation is adopted at the monthly meeting of the Timaru City Council tomorrow, the section of main road from the crest of the Showgrounds Hill to Washdyke racecourse corner will be named Hilton Highway, in honour of the city’s first woman mayor, Mrs Muriel Hilton. Mrs Hilton, widow of a former borough councillor, Mr F. A. Hilton, was also the first woman to serve on the city council when she was elected in 1950. In 1956. she was deputymayor, having been acting mayor for eight months, and in 1959 she became mayor. She served one term, and was re-elected to the city council last year. In 1959, Mrs Hilton was appointed deputy-chairman of the National Council of Adult Education. She was recently appointed a justice of the peace. In 1953 she was awarded a Coronation Medal for her service to adult education and to the kindergarten movement
