£lm SHORT

(New Zealand Press Association)

APIA, August 20.

In the last four months the Bank of Western Samoa has had requests from 10(H) planters for loans amounting to more than £1 million.

The requests were made after New Zealand announced it would make available £lOO,OOO for restoration of the plantations devastated in the hurricane last January.

The supervisor of the development department of the bank, Mr D. Phineas, said the applications included many ambitious and feasible schemes.

But, he added, the bank did not have anywhere nearly enough money to finance them.

“If the bank had £1 million available for agricultural development loans, it could be profitably used”, said Mr Phineas.

Meanwhile, he said, the bank’s development department was working on a capital of £lO,OOO.
