The Railways Department is maintaining a regular “anti-pilfering” patrol at the scene of Tuesday’s 16-waggon derailment at Te Horo, on the west coast 43 miles north of Welling? ton. There is no evidence that! thieves have been at work, but the department is taking no chances with considerable cargo still in the entangled waggons. Two new motor-cars, wheat, drums of oil and a variety of
(Smaller items were being carried at the time of the crash. A railways official said tonight that some items had already been re-consigned. The remainder would be re-( covered on Sunday when low] rail traffic would give work-' men time and room to move the heavy waggons. The department now hopes to salvage all waggons and equipment damaged in the crash. Damage to rails and signal equipment was especially ! lighter than was first thought. A department official said tonight that all waggons would be taken to the Hutt ■ railway workshops and should eventually be returned to service. They are understood to , be worth “tens of thousands ' of pounds."
