WORKMEN KILLED

Collapse Of Bridge (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) OTTAWA, August 11. At least six people were killed and 47 injured yesterday when two spans of a bridge under construction in Ottawa collapsed, plunging the victims into the Rideau river. Fifteen of the injured were reported in a critical condition. Hundreds of volunteers, including the Mayor, Mr Don Reed, rushed to the scene of the accident. The two spans of the bridge, built 80ft above the river surface, left a gap of 200 yards in the structure when they plummeted down. Wooden forms, metal reinforcement sections and concrete slabs fell within seconds, with some of the workmen tangled among the debris. An estimated 70 workmen were on the bridge when the collapse occurred.
