REPRINTS AND NEW EDITIONS

High Noon for Coaches. By J. Halket Millar. Revised and enlarged edition. A. H. and A. W. Reed. 204 pp. The story of old coaching days in Nelson, Westland and Marlborough is one that has been handed down from a bygone time, when roads were tortuous, narrow and, in places, difficult to negotiate. In summer the drive through the Buller Gorge could be “a sheer delight”—to quote the author. In winter, with the river running high, it was another story. Tom and Harry Newman, pioneers of the coaching service, could tell of hairbreadth escapes. So also could elderly people with memories of the coaching era. Mr Halket Millar, from conversations with such people, and from delving into old newspapers, has been able to produce an enjoyable book which is delightfully illustrated.
