15 Shifts In 19 Years
Fifteen shifts in 19 years have involved many major and minor adjustments for the family of Commander M. Johnson, who has arrived in Christchurch to command the United States Navy base at Christchurch Airport. But the Christchurch climate will pose no problem. The family had just spent four years in Brunswick, Maine, which was exactly the same latitude north of the equator as Christchurch was south, Mrs Mary Johnson said yesterday. Her long-legged teen-age daughter, Beth Lauren, who has brought her suntan from the other side of the Atlantic, will wear a school uniform for the first time. “Do you have to wear the shoes or do you think they will let me wear my loafers?” she asked. Commander and Mrs Johnson have not yet chosen a school for their daughter, but Beth has surveyed the uniform of nearby Burnside High School with a critical eye. Moving was from home to home, no* from house to house, said Mrs Johnson, who has liked all 19 postings. “All our military friends thought we had a fabulous set of rules this time,” she said.
