A young Thai woman lost an expensive string of pink pearls and all her personal papers, including a passport, when her handbag was stolen from a public convenience in* Auckland on Friday night.

Miss Chantana Suwannakarn, a student who has been in New Zealand for a year, is heart-broken about the theft The string of very rare pink pearls was sent to her as a present from her father, a

Bangkok jeweller. It it valued at about £2OO. The handbag also contained her valuable text books, without which she is at present unable to do her homework. Miss Suwannakarn is staying with Commander J. E Washbourne, and Mrs Washbourne, at Remuera. The Washbournes have only recently returned from Thailand. ■ ”We lived in Bangkok for quite a while and never haa any trouble like this. It’s a very poor advertisement for New Zeeland,” said Mrs Washbourne.
