FRANCE IN SIDE TO PLAY OTAGO
The New Brighton professional coach, K. France, has won his place in Canterbury’s senior soccer team within three weeks of arriving in New Zealand. He has been selected as right-back in the team to play against Otago in the first leg of the Jones Cup at Dunedin next Saturday.
France joins his fellow Brighton club coach, T. Conley, who will captain the side from the left-half position. France is one of three players in the team, announced. yesterday by the sole selector (Mr V. R. Smith), who have not previously played for Canterbury. The other two are F. Nichol, the Waterside right-wing, and J. Gibson, the Rangers insideforward. However, Gibson this season has played for the Wellington representative under--23 team before he recently moved to Christchurch. In addition to the three newcomers, three other players have been recalled to the senior side after some years’ absence—G. Donaldson, W. Yates and W. Logan. Donaldson last played for
Canterbury in September, 1963, Logan in August, 1964, and Yates in September, 1961. Yates and Gibson have been bracketed at inside-right. Only five of the team which lost to Wellington have been retained (T. Haydon, of Western, was not available), while C. Hicks played against South Canterbury. The team Is: O. Nuttridge (City); K. France (Brighton), A. Hawthorn (Shirley-Nomads): A. Gowans (City), G. Donaldson (ShirleyNomads), T. Conley (Brighton): F. Nichol (Waterside), W. Yates (Shamrock) or J. Gibson (Rangers), C. Hicks (Hi 5.0.8. R. Taylor (City), W. Logan (Technical).
