Sydenham Fades

SHIRLEY 20: M. Toner, D. Cope, D. Longley, B. Nunan, tries; R. Hicks, a dropped goal; B. Richards, a conversion and a penalty goal. SYDENHAM 5: D. L. Gallop, a try; A. Dunlop a conversion. Shirley made better use of the opportunities from broken play in the early game at Rugby Park and this gave it the edge over Sydenham. The play throughout was rather untidy, the ball going to ground frequently. The Shirley forwards, with B. Gosney in the van, were always there to harass the opposition and carry play on. Gosney played an outstanding game, and his covering was as thorough as his attacking play. M. Taylor and Toner gave him consistent support. The best of the Shirley backs were the half-back, R. Gearry, and the centre, Cope. Sydenham held out the vigorous Shirley team for most of the first half but later, against the wind, faded rather badly. K. Tucker made valiant efforts to rally his pack and received good support from A. Jolley and P. Riddell. The only back to show any form was Dunlop, who several times broke through only to see the movement falter further out. Referee: Mr G. E. Albertson.
