Playing more constructive Rugby, particularly in the second spell, New Brighton scored * r c . onv ' n u c i ln ,< ? ln against the D.C.L. Shield leader. Had its regular goal-kicker, G. Stanley, been playing. New Brighton might have increased its score considerably. University B had a territorial advantage in the first half but met a sound New Brighton defence. The University B backs wasted a lot of possession by indiscriminate kicking. New Brighton found its feet towards the end of the first half and its forwards began to dictate play. The New Brighton pack continued to dominate plav in the second spell and with its backs using the possession skilfully a further three tries were scored.
In the New Brighton pack, R Claxton and M. Duke played well in the tight and E. Leask and G. Tanner were a lively pair of loose forwards, who were often prominent in passing rushes.
The versatile B. March, deputising at half-back, was in grand [° r PV varied his play well and linking up with his forwards and passing, competently. C. Smith directed play capably at first five-eighths. y J - Ca.ldweM was the pick of the University B pack and R. Hockley produced his usual solid game. A replacement fiveeighths E. Hewitt was the only University B back to show any penetration, while B. M. Weenink snowed speed and made several strong runs on the right wing. Referee: Mr L. S. Kirk.
