PRIZE STOCK SALES

More Support Sought Buyers of Associated Meat Buyers Ltd. are to operate as usual at Addington market on the day prize stock are sold, but there will be no restriction on individual butchers bidding for any stock in which they are interested. This decision was reached at a recent meeting of representatives of agricultural and pastoral associations. the Stock Auctioneers’ Association, stockbuyers and A.M.B. A letter from the managingdirector of A.M.B. (Mr J. H. Sproston) advising the Canterbury A. and P. Association of this was received at a general committee meeting of the association. Mr Sproston said that the meeting had been called because of the concern expressed about the low value realised for prize stock at the last National Fat Stock Show. A.M.B. representatives had pointed out that some of the prize stock was most unsuitable for the retail meat trade.

“In effect the A.M.B. buyer would be operating more or less in a reserve capacity should it be found, in any pen, that butchers were showing a lack of interest,” Mr Sproston said. “The directors of this company make a special appeal to all members of the trade to support the National Fat Stock Sale. “Producers cannot be expected to continue to make special efforts to produce prize stock unless they are reasonably certain of obtaining a financial reward,” he said.
