AUCKLAND PROBLEM
Request For Action (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 14. Mr W. W. Freer (Opp., Mt. Albert) tonight challenged the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Seath) to tell Parliament of any proposed action on the local bodies problem in Auckland. Mr Freer—speaking in the half-hour adjournment debate —asked the Minister what action he was taking or proposed to take on the multiplicity of local bodies in the area. He urged that the Local Government Commission be sent to Auckland to do something positive about the situation. The commission had been “running around the country” hearing evidence, but what had happened in Auckland? asked Mr Freer. The Minister said there was no question that the Auckland central area was a problem. He pointed out that Manukau City had been formed as a result of legislation passed by the present Government, and Manukau had developed quite satisfactorily as a city. Mr Seath suggested that Opposition members of Parliament from electorates in the Auckland area should cooperate more on the matter.
