O. Sarapu Now Double N.Z. Chess Champion

O. Sarapu (Auckland), the. New Zealand over-the-board chess champion, is now also the national correspondence chess champion. He won the 1965-66 championship of the New Zealand Correspondence Chess Association by half a point from R. A. Court of Wellington. B. E. Howard (Auckland) and R. S. Wilkin (Palmerston North) tied for third place, three points behind Court

Sarapu, not previously on the correspondence association’s ranking list, now heads it with 890 points. Court, also newly placed, is second with 871 points, and the previous season’s champion, F. A. Verkade (Balclutha); class SA, R. Crawford (New Plymouth); class 58, R. Waayman (Kawerau). The handicap tournament was won by Verkade, with A. L. Wilkinson (Christchurch) second and his brother B. D. Wilkinson third. I Best game awards went to

W. A. Donald (Auckland), reserve grade; R. G. Shaw (Lower Hutt), class 2; B. W. Anderson (Upper Hutt), class 3: and Mrs M. A. Spens-Black (Rotorua), classes 4 and 5. Esterman’s Success L. Esterman (Christchurch) entered the 1963-66 first British Commonwealth individual correspondence chess championship, the only New Zealander to do so. He came fifth, gaining five points of a possible nine. New Zealand has entered a team in the Asian Cup correspondence chess tournament. Nine other countries have entered, some with more than one team. The New Zealand representatives are Sarapu, Foulds D. I. Lynch (Auckland) and D. J. Cooper (Auckland). Dr. N. E. H. Fulton (Ashburton) has been elected president of the Correspondence Chess Association. He succeeds the late Mr R. W. Park, of Inglewood.
