Surprise Call

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 14. A man walked into a building which had been stripped ready for demolition, made a telephone call, and walked out again, leaving for the owner a telephone bill for £lO3. “The first I knew of it was when I returned to the building on Monday to pick up some gear. While I was there the Post Office rang wanting to confirm a 103-minute call to London on the previous day,” said the owner, Mr G. E. Gallagher. “Of course, as far as I knew there had been no-one In the building. “We had finished clearing the building on Saturday and as I had asked to have the telephone disconnected we thought nothing of it,” he said. The chief postmaster in Auckland (Mr A. C. Jones) said later that the caller had been found and had paid the bill.
