VANDALS IN PARK
Trees Broken Or Stolen Vandals and thieves continue to thwart the efforts of the Christchurch City Council reserves department to plant trees in Bower Park, New Brighton road. In the four years since the park was established, between 70 and 80 trees have been destroyed or stolen. The latest attempt to plant the reserve was made on Monday, but by Wednesday City Council workmen were removing the broken pieces. Some trees were pulled out, others were broken and hacked about, and one had been stolen. There were two chestnuts, two beech, a plane, and a silver birch, between 7ft and Bft high. The director of the department (Mr H. G. Gilpin) said yesterday that trees had been planted every year since the park was established, and all had been destroyed by vandals. Planting had been carried out twice a year. Last year 30 trees were put in, and all were killed or stolen. “It is extremely difficult to get these trees established throughout the city because of vandalism,” Mr Gilpin said. “This latest incident is one of the worst cases we have had.”
Mr Gilpin said a £lO reward was payable to anyone giving information leading to a court conviction for the destruction of council property. It had been paid once or twice, but not for cases in Bower Park.
