Tourist Hotels
Sir, —The recent announcement of heavy losses by the Tourist Hotel Corporation, and its trivial credit in hand, remind us that reform is overdue. I suggest doing away with the head office of the corporation. Hotel managers should be responsible for the management of hotels. -Important developments could be submitted to the Minister through an accountant in the Tourist Department. Certainly there should be good hotel accommodation, but the proportion of millionaires among park visitors is small. Many New Zealanders require motels, a restaurant, mountain huts, and ski-ing facilities. Overseas visitors expect comfort and good meals, but not all want luxury regardless of cost. The Ball Hut is very popular with young skiers. I understand that hotel management began to remove fittings from it, to force visitors to stay at the Hermitage instead. The Park Board rightly intervened. The parks belong to New Zealanders, who should not be kept out by prices beyond their means.— Yours, etc., ARTHUR LUSH. June 16, 1966. [The Tourist Hotel Corporation had no comment to make on this letter.]
