School Rugby
Sir,—After seeing Wednesday’s School-College game, I came away disgusted. One side’s approach to football left a lot to be desired. Illegal tactics, punching, late tackling, etc., appeared to be the order of the day, and brought the standard to an all-time ‘flow” In school sportsmanship. Never in my 50 years as a spectator have I seen players warned by a referee in this game. Lincoln College is to be congratulated on its approach to rough play, and I hope the C.R.F.U. will be more positive in its approach to foul play.—Yours, etc., AJAX. July 14, 1966.
Sir, —I thoroughly endorse the ideas of “An Old Boy” on the recent School-College game. The game, as Rugby, was pathetic, but as a gladitorial combat it was beyond belief. Unnecessarily fiery rucking and vicious, often late, tackling unfortunately were not met with the severe judicial action they deserved. Obviously the aim was to keep the good man down, and too often it was achieved. As an old boy, I appreciate the stress and strain attached to this particular game and the importance of winning; but if this will to win is to lead to the unsavoury spectacle we witnessed last Wednesday, 1 strongly suggest the fixture be abandoned.—Yours, etc., ALTIORA PETO. July 14, 1966.
