CHECK ON DOGS
Prosecution Considered Concerned at the number of unregistered dogs in its area, the Rangiora County Council will make a series of spot checks on dogs in various areas of the county and may prosecute defaulting owners. In recent weeks farmers have had trouble with dogs savaging sheep, especially in the Tuahiwi area.' One farmer has lost 70 of a flock of 400 in the last few weeks. The County Council has issued a public notice reminding dog owners that registration is overdue and drawing their attention to the provisions of Section 2 of the Dog Registration Act, 1955. The act says that "no person shall keep any dog of a greater age than six months for a period of 14 days unless the dog is for the time being registered." The maximum penalty for a breach of this act is £2O.
The County Clerk to the Rangiora County Council (Mr A. A. H. McKenzie) said that it was proposed to make the checks with a view to prosecutions.
