Count Filou Is Egmont Pick

“The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NTH. The veteran Count Filou might go close to winning the Walter Williams Handicap at the Egmont Racing Club’s meeting at Hawera tomorrow.

Count Filou has not raced since he failed in the Garden Place Handicap at Te Rapa on May 21. Before that he ran a close fourth behind Creemore, Red Siren and Bandon in the Waterloo Handicap at Trentham on May 11. A good effort tomorrow would enhance Count Filou’s Trentham prospects. Northern reports indicate that Count Filou has thrived since his last race. Although the Hawera track might not suit hir.i as well as roomier courses, Count Filou has undoubted staying ability which should carry him through, especially if the ground is very heavy. - Count Filou will be ridden by R. J. Skelton. Sue Paul, another northerner, could make a bold bid. She is a recent graduate to open ranks with two wins in the last two months. One of them was a good victory in a mile hack race at Ellerslie.

Sue Paul performed creditably in the Woodstock Stakes at Te Awamutu on Saturday. She made up ground at the finish. The smaller field tomorrow will suit her better.

Bright Coral and Lady Wild will also appeal. Bright Coral resumed racing at the Manawatu meeting. He ran a very good race on the first day and an early success could come his way. Lady Wild is in good form. She ran second to Fleeting

Moment at Trentham and was fourth on the first day of the Manawatu meeting. Lady Wild has been given plenty of racing lately, and is holding her form and condition. The best of the others may be Chatty Lady and Kimber. Corina appeals for the Hawera Handicap, second leg of the main double. This capable Wanganui-trained sprinter is resuming after a rest. She usually runs her best races fresh.

Corina won sprints at Waverley, New Plymouth and Awapuni earlier in the season. Then her form slipped. She is reported to have freshened well. Corina has 8-7, but R. B. Marsh will be able to claim an allowance. Astarito, fourth in an intermediate event at Te Awamutu on Saturday, the Taka-nini-trained Equality, which is at present at Awapuni, Master Defence, Bijali, and the consistent Blue Veil appear the best of the others. Selection®:— 11.30 a.m.—Turuturu Hack Hurdlas: O'lde Chelsea, Beyond, Fabriano. 12.10 p.m.—Patea Hack Handicap: Avelyn, Arabian Belle, Foxonewa. 12.45 p.m.—Opunake Steeplechase: Great Era, Blue Stand, Prejudice. 1.25 p.m.—Brookdale Hack Handicap: Count De Seine, Four Aces, Mystery Man. 2.10 p.m.—Walter Williams Handicap; Count Fllou, Sue Paul, Lady Wild. 2.50 p.m,—South Taranaki Stakes First Division: Rahpete, Auctioneer.
