First Women Elders

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CULROSS, (Scotland), June 20. Seven women were admitted yesterday as elders of the Church of Scotland, the first to hold the position. The church’s General Assembly authorised the appointment of women elders at a meeting three weeks ago in Edinburgh. The Rev. A. Q. Morton, minister of Culross Abbey, said in a sermon that "since the time of Paul, the place of women in the church has been twofold—to wear a hat in church and shut up. “Some people recognise today as an historical moment, but for 1950 years, the church's view on women has been pretty much a disgrace to the name of Christianity.”
