AVON TROUT DEPLETED

“Poaching” By Youths Concerned at the depletion of trout in the Avon river, the City Council last evening agreed to extend the prohibited fishing area to include the whole of the river between the Armagh street bridge and the Barbadoes street bridge. The North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society said that although attention was drawn to the restriction on junior fishing licences prohibiting fishing between the bridge by the United Tennis Club courts and the Colombo street bridge, there was quite consistent poaching by youthful offenders. More recently, with the introduction of special fishing tackle and “sophisticated” baits, a great toll of the fish had been taken by youths, and the trout population was noticeably depleted. In an effort to preserve the natural beauty of Christchurch, the society had tried to maintain a reasonably good number of trout in the Avon.
