Flaws In Stamps Two major flaws in 9d postage stamps have been found by Mr A. Dance, of Hokitika. One stamp has no red colour In the Union Jack, and the red is also missing from the stars of the Southern Cross. On another, the Union Jack is half red, and only half of the stars are coloured. Mr Dance said yesterday that he bought the stamps recently in Wellington.—(P.A.) Heavy Frost A frost of 10 degrees, the second heaviest since last August, was recorded at Harewood yesterday morning. There was a frost of nine degrees at the Botanic Gardens. The heaviest frost this year was 11 degrees at Harewood on June 16. The day was fine and mild with a light north-easterly wind, and the temperature reached 55 Jegrees at 3 p.m. The temperature was 32 degrees at 6 a.m., 29 degrees at 9 a.m. and 49 degrees at noon. The temperature gauge on the Government Life building registered 52 degrees at 5 p.m. Actor’s Visit Off The American film actor, Charlton Heston, and his family were due to arrive in Christchurch today, but the hotel at which they were to stay has been advised that sickness has caused the hotel booking to be cancelled. The Hestons were to stay here until Saturday. Mr Heston is visiting New Zealand under the sponsorship of the United States Government. He will give poetry and drama readings at Auckland and Wellington. “False Idea”

Demand rather than comfort, and openness rather than closed security, were requirements of genuine religion, Canon Hugh Montefiore, vicar of the University Church, Cambridge, told a crowded meeting in the Canterbury University Hall yesterday. Some people had a false idea of religion as providing them with a haven from the world and their problems, he said. Although the existence of God could not be proved scientifically, there were many reasonable considerations which pointed to the truth of His existence. Ready To Resist The "typical” hotel receptionist was described by a delegate to the annual conference of community public relations officers at Timaru yesterday as “perfectly correct, icily indifferent, and one who looked at a person with dumb insolence, as if he had come out of a piece of cheese.” A receptionist, he added, should receive a higher salary than the manager, because she created the first, vital impression. Another speaker suggested that hotel receptionists were so accustomed to resisting the advances of commercial travellers that they treated everyone the same way.— (F.0.0.R.) Deferred Proposals for the rezoning of the Fendalton road-Clyde road shopping area, and for the widening of Fendalton road from the railway crossing to Memorial avenue, were referred by the Waimairi County Council last night to the next meeting of its townplanning committee. Forgotten Lady A forgotten lady who spent all her life at sea until she became an exhibit in the Auckland Museum’s maritime hall has now been identified after several years at the museum. She is a ship’s figurehead whose identity was unknown until a visitor walked in with an old newspaper cutting. The figurehead came from the barque Alice A. Leigh, better known as the Rewa, which is now rusting away as a beached hulk at Moturekareka Island. AU Passed When 140 drivers over 70 were tested for renewal of their driving licences last month, all passed, the chief inspector (Traffic Officer W. Sterritt) told the Waimairi County Council last night. By contrast, with new applicants, 309 passed,'and 103 failed.
