Avonhead Bus
Sir, —While appreciating the efforts of the Transport Board to improve the lot of bus passengers in the Avonhead area, I fail to understand why it has extended the Creyke road service, instead of the Riccarton service, to Staveley street. Most persons
who use this bus during the day are mothers with young families, who would have a limited amount of time to spend away from their homes. The Riccarton shopping area is where they want to go to — not all the way into the city. The Creyke road timetable is very poor compared to the Riccarton service and I feel that an extension to the Riccarton service would be a more lucrative proposition for the board, and an infinitely better service to Avonhead patrons. The board has been influenced by those persons who see trade drifting from the city area. The fare-pay-ing passenger is not really considered.—Yours, etc., TIRED FEET. May 30, 1966. [The general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board (Mr J. F. Fardell) replies: “Before extending the Avonhead service, the board .gave full consideration to the method of providing a service for people resident in and around the junction of Avonhead road and Staveley street, and it was found that the best method of providing a service from this point was by the extension of the Avonhead route. It is possible, on this bus, to reach the Riccarton shopping centre by a short walk from either the Titoki street stop or Straven road stop. The Riccarton route, which is also within the catchment area of Staveley street, could be used by the residents if they so desired.”]
