Tatua Could Extend Laramie At Awapuni

"The Press" Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH, June 17. The clash between the locally - trained Laramie and the Cambridge visitor Tatua promises to be the highlight of the Booths Gin Winter Handicap at Awapuni today. These fine gallopers are likely to dispute favouritism in the race which will be the first leg of the T.A.B. double on the second and concluding day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s winter meeting. Track conditions, while they may not really suit either horse, are unlikely to be sufficiently bad to annul their chances. They should handle the footing at least as well as any of their main rivals. Fine weather during the week has resulted in the going becoming really puggy and, unless there is rain meantime the track will be more holding than on the first day. The weather is unsettled and there must be a possibility of some showers today. Laramie has come through the final stages of his preparation to the satisfaction of trainer H. J. Waller, who has advised the chestnut’s owner (Mrs J. F. Hughes, of Auckland) to make the Palmerston North trip. Tatua, after his long trip by float, looked bright yesterday and W. Pratt is confi-

dent the champion will run right up to his best form.

Of the others, none has a better chance than the first day winner Vigour because the track will suit him no matter what happens. He is a solid inud runner, in winning form and a horse which could make matters very interesting for the favourites. Gus remains a hot favourite for the Members’ Handicap, the second leg. This will be his final race appearance before the Whyte Handicap but his rider, W. D. Skelton, will not spare him for he needs another sound gallop to

keep him in trim. Gus will attempt his fifth win in succession. Powerful Team A local trainer E. Temperton, only six behind the leader W. J. Hillis in the trainers’ premiership, will start a powerful team of jumpers. His three hurdlers Grand Coeur, Saturnian and Kamina are all leading prospects in the Awapuni Hurdles while last week’s winner, Copper Fair, must have a good chance in the Manawatu Steeplechase. The horses most likely to stop Temperton’s charges are Conspirator in the hurdles. He is booked for the Winter and Grand National Hurdles later on—and Facade, which is using the Manawatu Steeplechase as a stepping stone to the Grand National at Riccarton. His trainer intends to bypass the Wellington fixture in July.
