LINWOOD WILL WORRY HORNBY

The narrowness of Hornby’s most recent championship wins has added interest to its match with last year’s runner-up, Linwood, at the Show Grounds tomorrow.

In turn Marist, Sydennam and Addington have come close to upsetting Hornby’s unbeaten record and Linwood has defeated all but Addington by more comfortable margins. The Linwood back-line is an experienced attacking unit with W. J. Godfrey an able director close to the scrum. However, the grand form that J. M. Bray (Hornby) displayed against Marist last week could be an omen of what may eventuate tomorrow. Should Bray be allowed too much latitude Hornby’s fast outside backs will prosper. Both teams have hard-work-ing packs but Linwood has

the services of the Canterbury hooker, W. P. Noonan, and an able substitute in J Fonatea, who has out-hooked the experienced J. E. Bond (Kaiapoi) and B. T. Barron (Sydenham) in recent weeks. Addington and Sydenham will meet in another attractive draw. Sydenham has lost form in recent weeks but its more solid methods may be better than Addington’s erratic brilliance. Marist, without M. H. Mohi, could encounter considerable trouble from Kaiapoi on its home ground, a decided advantage. Papanui should win over Christchurch in spite of the latter’s defeat of Addington in the Tavendale Cup.
