TROTTING CHAMAN ATONES FOR CUP EIGHTH
Narrow Winner At Nelson Yesterday (Tram Our Own Reporter) NELSON. Chaman, a disappointing eighth in the Caltex Gold Cup on Saturday, made amends with a narrow win over the favourite, Ulight, in the Craddock Handicap at the Nelson Trotting Club’s meeting yesterday.
Winfield Chief, a place-getter on Saturday, outfinished the hot favourite, Student, in a sensational Motueka Handicap, the second leg of the double.
The Chanaan-Winfield Chief combination paid £202 2s 6d for £l.
Chaman. at more than 10; to 1. recorded an outstanding performance in the Craddock: Handicap as he was slow away | and last in a fairly spread! field near the mile. He was switched wide on the track in the run home by Ji P. Nyhan and in a hard slog over the final 150 yards got up to win by a nose. Raced by Mr J. Hall, of Hope, Chaman is trained by C. S. Donald at Belfast. He has now won four races for Mr Hall, who secured him early in the season. He is a gelding by Brahman from Daybreak, a halfsister to Rupee. Lynbyrne. and other winners. As well as Chaman, Showpiece and Eyreton lost ground at the start Took Control Tahu led out, but after five furlongs Snow Chief took control. Eyreton put in a strong run round the field to be handy to False Spring and Cindy racing to the straight with Richard Hanover, Vantage and Snow Chief fairly
handy and Ulight making up ground. Ulight, Vantage, Eyreton, and Richard Hanover were in line at the furlong post, with Tahu and Cindy up and Chaman putting in his claim wide out.
In a battling finish Chaman responded slightly the better to wear down Ulight and win by a nose. Richard Hanover raced right up to his first-day effort to finish third, half a length [away and a neck in front of Vantage, with Eyreton far from disgraced in fifth place. Then came Tahu, Doctor Jim and False Spring. Perfect Ran Student, a stablemate of Chaman, received a perfect run just behind the pacei maker. Golden Garry, in the Motueka Handicap. He raced to a clear lead near the furlong post and looked ready for a very easy win. However, he came to the end of his run 75 yards out and stopped almost to a walk in a matter of a stride or two. R. P. Nyhan made vain efforts
to get him back to a reasonable speed again, but the post came too soon.
After being a fair way back in the running, Winfield Chief came home in most determined style to win by a neck from Dawn Peterson, which finished strongly. Student wg.s half a length back third, seven lengths in front of John, which joined issues with the leaders at the furlong only to stop badly and drop out. Fallax and Major Stream headed a tired lot. I Handy Win French Pass, a place-getter cn the first day at his first race start, gained a handy [win in the Westport Handi!cap. He took the lead when ißosina broke near the halfmile and opened a break of (four lengths over Awayugo [and Oh Johnny racing to the straight. French Pass again gave M. Holmes a difficult drive. He : ran right to the outside fence. However, once straightened h e ran on in fine style and won by two lengths from Awayugo, with two lengths and a half to Silver Spring, which made up ground. Sidi Barrani was beaten off fourth, ahead of World Peace, Sleeman, which broke early in the run home, and Fair Trial.
