N.Z.B.C. Profit All From TV

(New Zealand Ptyss Association) WELLINGTON, June 14. The New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation made a net profit of £1,360,000 —all from television. Its radio services operated at a loss.

The annual report of the Controller and Auditor-Gen-eral tabled in Parliament today said: ’ “An increase of £1,250,000 in income—mainly

television revenue—was only sufficient to contain costs which have risen steeply during the year.”

The report said although the Post Office had in recent years installed a large-capac-ity combined microwavecoaxial cable system, the corporation considered that on technical and economic grounds it should have its own television relay system.

“Whatever the technical problems peculiar to New Zealand may be, it could be very expensive in capital generally and In overseas funds in particular, to have two systems if one can suffice. “Further efforts should be made to reconcile the differing plans for development.” The Post Office had microwave links between Auckland and Wellington and links to other parts of the country had been installed or were under construction.
