CHANGES AT PARK

Preparation For Games

The main ground at Lancaster Park had been returfed with grass from the back oval and the back of the embankment had been refenced as far as No. 4 stand, the grounds committee reported to the Victory Park Board. The Christchurch City Council has asked that more crash barriers be erected on the embankment and this is expected to be finished within the next few days. The Canterbury Rugby Union had notified the board that it considered the boys’ enclosure too big, and members of the board agreed after they inspected the ground. The enclosure will be halved and it is hoped that another 1000 adult spectators will be accommodated.

The board agreed to renew the sft race along the bottom of the embankment because they felt that spectators were becoming accustomed to the idea of reaching the embankment from the field and the race avoided a lot of congestion.

The board was told that these arrangements and the extra seating on the field should be ready for the match between the Lions and New Zealand Universities on June 22. The New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation had got in touch with the board, arranging for permission to erect a tower in the car park to film the games. This year there will be no tower on the embankment as in previous years. The board was also told by the N.Z.B.C. that Pacific Film Productions, Ltd., and “an overseas television company” were also interested in using the tower for filming the international games.

It was decided to Inquire into the possibility of borrowing flagpoles from the Christchurch City Council to erect at the back of the embankment for the Lions-Canter-bury game and the test.
