29 Chch. Players Qualify In Singles
"The Press” Special Servlet INVERCARGILL. Twenty-nine Christchurch players were still in the national indoor bowls singles championship after the first round was completed yesterday—some of them with the assistance of byes. The singles matches will be completed this afternoon.
Yesterday morning two more Canterbury pairs qualified for post-section play, making a total of 18. Post-section play begins tomorrow. Yesterday’s qualifying skips were N. Austin and G. N. Taylor. The Christchurch players remaining in the singles are:— N. Austin, K. Beddie, A. G. Blanch, W. T. Brown, Mrs E. Claydon, K. Claydon, I. Cross, Mrs H. Darrock, L. Fairbairn, Mrs B. Gee, R. Gifford, J. A. Greer, P. Logan, R. McCreanor, Mrs R. McCreanor, L. Mayhew, Mrs N. C. Morris, W. G. Morris, J. Mosley, J. R. Patterson, Mrs B. Penny, E. G. F. Smith, D. J. Stewart, G. W. Taylor, E. Tebay, R. J. Watkin, H. Williams, Mrs K. Williams, A. E. Williamson. Post-section play began In the singles yesterday afternoon and the field was cut down to 256 players. All the name players came through and there were no real upsets, the Press Association reported. P. Clark (Bay of Plenty) and P. Kent (Bluff) provided the best game of the afternoon, going to the 14th head before the umpire’s measure decided the issue. Clark took the game.
The Auckland champion, B. Pridham had an easy 13-7 win and A. F. Williamson, a former runner-up in the New Zealand singles, beat V. Pointen
(Hutt), 11-8, In a close match. A total of 265 pairs qualified and 41 of these are skipped by women. The pairs champion In 1958, L. Dunn of Dunedin, was among the qualifiers but Mrs N. Buckley (Canterbury) who was his lead when he won eight years ago, failed to make the grade.
