Mayor May Not Go To Jamaica
The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning) may not now be a member of the delegation to Kingston, Jamaica, to support Christchurch’s application for the 1970 Empire Games next month.
Mr Manning has written a letter to the finance committee of the Christchurch City Council, which will sponsor the delegation, advising that he will have to withdraw. The contents of the letter were taken in committee.
Cr. H. P. Smith, chairman of the committee, said it was very important that Mr Manning should go. “Some of those who are sponsoring the bid for the Games and a number of councillors feel it is very important that the Mayor should lead this delegation,” said Cr. Smith last evening. “They are hoping that he may yet be able to go.
“In the event of Mr Manning not being able to go, there will be discussions as to whether someone else should take his place.” The other delegates are awaiting the decision on Mr Manning’s membership, as arrangements are now well in hand for the work to be done when the delegation arrives in Jamaica.
