Holmes Tops Drivers’ List
(From Our Own Reporter) NELSON. M. Holmes went away to a lead of one point over P. Wolfenden on the drivers’ list for the season when Disneyland gained a deserved win in the second division of the Pelorus Handicap at Richmond Park on Saturday. Disneyland drew out under a vigorous drive to beat GayJohn by almost two lengths, with a gap to Newlands. This division was marred by Scotts Song's breaking near the three furlongs. He brought down Rosalie Morn and badly checked Falincia. UNLUCKY SECOND Earlier in the day Disneyland had finished a rather unlucky second to Black Tulip In the Rai Handicap, the first leg of the on-course double Disneyland was badly placed until very late in the race and made up ground to run the winner to half a length. Rosalie Morn held on gamely to shade Hazelburn Lass for third. Stormy Scott completed an on-course double worth £37 9s for £1 when he outstayed White Smoke, Fallax and Unreal, with the surprise favourite, Spry. next, in the Tahuna Handicap. It was a fine staying run on the part of Stormy Scott. The first division of the' Pelorus Handicap resulted ini a surprise win for the Blen-heim-owned and trained John ; Peel at odds of almost 40 to! 1. Owned and trained by R. 1
Connolly, John Peel was driven by S. F. Black, who is associated with H. W. Cox’s Winton team. Black, who was born in Blenheim, is aged 18. He had had only eight previous drives at totalisator meetings and his win with John Peel was his first
Echo, Tryax and Moonstorm, a member of Cox’s team, finished second and third ahead of Sam Scott. HUNG BADLY
Blenheim stables went close to gaining a second win with French Pass in the Belgrove Handicap. Had he not hung badly, there is little doubt he would have kept dear of the favourite Norwood Lass. French Pass, which was having his first race start, is trained at Blenheim by F. F. Scott for Mr C. Pateman. He was well clear for most of the race, but ran about badly in the home straight allowing Norwood Lass to beat him by two lengths, with three lengths to Abel and a long gap to the tiring Propetre. STRONG FINISH Although she broke on the home turn, Norwood Lass had I too much stamina for her rivals in the Foxhill Handicap. She finished very strongly and won going away by seven lengths from Hasty Note, which was having his first start Dawn Peterson gave South-
land stables their only win for the day when she got up to beat Laurinda, Sal’s Hope and the rather unlucky Miss Step in the Appleby Handicap, which provided one of the keenest finishes of the day. Miss Step received a poor run from the second line and came from near the tail of the field on the home turn. The favourite, Ewtor, finished eleventh after rushing to the front at the seven furlongs. Winning Son ran a fair race for a close fifth, just ahead of Restabelle and Surrey Hills, which looked a danger when she came through on the inner near the furlong.
