South Island

Qualifying

The first qualifying rounds in the South Island for this year’s New Zealand ploughing championships were held last week in Nelson and Marlborough. Three further qualifying events will be held in Canterbury this week. At Nelson a local ploughman who has ploughed before in a New Zealand final, D. McDowell, won in a strong field of 15 ploughmen. J. Kyle, of Timaru, was second and P. Corlett, of Blenheim, was third. In Marlborough there was a field of 12 and here another New Zealand finalist, P. I. McCallum, of Blenheim, won. J. Kyle filled second place again and I. M. Jordan, of Blenheim, was third.

This week’s qualifying rounds will be held at Methven on Tuesday, at Lincoln on Thursday and in North Canterbury on Saturday. In the New Zealand final at Gore on July 30 two men will be selected to represent New Zealand in next year’s world championships which will be held at Broadfields in Canterbury in May.
