SYDENHAM SCORES SEVEN TRIES
SYDENHAM 34: D. Gallop (2), T. Bradbury, K. Tucker, A. Jolley, P. Riddell, A. Dunlop, tries; Dunlop, five conversions and a penalty goal. BELFAST 8: R. Hickey, try; R. Inwood, conversion; R. Holt, dropped goal. Belfast gave its most inept display of Rugby for many years when it crashed to a 34-8 defeat against Sydenham. Sydenham scored seven tries and might well have scored more had W. Dowell, at first five-eighth, not so consistently died with the ball. Apart from Dowell, the Sydenham backs had a real field day with A. Dunlop scoring 16 points from a try, a penalty goal and five conversions. G. Hay showed considerable penetration from the wing in the line as the extra man, and combined well with T. Bradbury at centre and D. Gallop at full-back. Sydenham’s forwards ran Bel-
fast ragged and, in spite of the huge number of penalties they conceded for infringements in the line-outs, had slowed the Belfast pack to a slow dog-trot by the end.
A. Jolley played a tremendous game for Sydenham in the lineouts and rucks, leaping high above all opposition and charging like a tank in some solo bursts with the ball at hand. He was particularly well supported by C. King, R. Higgs and P. Riddell; but the entire pack was able to shine on the day. Both sides could have scored more points as Inwood missed four kicks and Dunlop three. Sydenham never gave the swift running Hay sufficient room in which to beat Ms man. It was not a game which provided great Rugby, but it had enough cut and thrust to provide plenty of excitement. The referee was Mr J. Bankier.
