Attempt To Burn Down Church

(New Zealand Press Association’ AUCKLAND, June 12. Vandals tried to burn down St. James’s Anglican Church at Ardmore during the week-end. They tore up hymn books and church music and burnt the altar curtains.

The organ was damaged and the interior of the 73-year-old building left in a mess. Pages torn from hymn books and music were strewn over the pews.

The remains of a fire made next to the western wall were found by parishioners arriving to attend service. Members of the church were in the building on Saturday

afternoon putting flowers in the vases and seeing everything was in order for the Sunday service. The church is four miles from Papakura on the road to Clevedon. Detectives are investigating. The church was established in 1861 by Bishop Selwyn. The original church was destroyed by fire on January 29, 1892. The new church was named St James’s and dedicated by Bishop Cowie on April 30, 1893.
