Westport Theatre Saved From Fire
(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, June 12. The alertness of two children, splendid work by the Westport Fire Brigade, and the absence of wind saved one of Westport’s largest buildings, the St. James’s Theatre, from destruction by fire on Saturday evening.
The outbreak was noticed in the vicinity of the boilerhouse at 5.15 p.m. by Robert Rodgers and Edward Duncan, who gave the alarm. Mr R. Malcolm (manager for Kerridge-Odeon) evacuated the theatre, which was well filled for the late afternoon screening, before calling the brigade. When fire burst through the rear portion of the main
roof with a minor explosion and smoke poured through the front windows, it appeared that the theatre would be lost.
But the brigade worked hard under some difficulties and kept the fire confined to the back portion. The Waimangaroa brigade which answered a call for assistance 10 mites away helped towards the end.
