Russians Vote For Supreme Soviet

(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) MOSCOW, June 12.

Soviet citizens voted today in general elections for the Supreme Soviet with all the top Kremlin leaders among the 1517 candidates.

Moscow polling stations were gaily decorated and “Pravda,” the Communist Party newspaper, encouraged voters by saying: “Never before has the Soviet Union enjoyed such high prestige in the world as today. “The country has major economic, scientific, technical

and cultural achievements to report on voting day,” said “Pravda.” Soviet industry ranked second in the world for volume of production, the economy was stronger, Soviet science had a glorious reputation and Russia’s weight in international affairs had further increased, said the newspaper. The voter has no choice of candidates, but has the right to delete the nominee’s name from the ballot paper if he objects. Deputies are elected for four years. Polling in the Soviet Union always produces a near-maxi-mum turnout, and more than 142 million people will vote today. The Prime Minister, Mr Alexei Kosygin, is a candidate in Moscow for the Soviet of Nationalities-second chamber of the Supreme Soviet. Others of the top Soviet leadership are due for reelection alongside 618 workers and collective farmers, 500 engineers and technicians and 425 women.
