June 14 HOKITIKA WAXWORK.—The waxwork exhibition mentioned in my last correspondence was opened on Saturday, but only for a very limited time. Armed with a suitable weapon, a man was seen to commence violently assaulting the image of Mrs Kinder, and succeeded in reducing the figure to particles before the astonished proprietor could stay the hand of the destroyer. The police were called, the t person given in charge, and fined £2 this morning in the Resident Magistarte’s Court for committing a breach of the
peace. The damage done will be the subject of a civil action, I opine. The defendant is Mr. Wood, .father of Mrs Kinder, publican, Hokitika. The residents in the streets bordering on the beach were unpleasantly surprised last night by a feeling of motion in their houses, as though they were rolling about in a steamer in the offing. Sure enough they were afloat, and some found their habitations had even shifted during the night This only shows what persons who live in sucn hazardous situations may expect—From our own correspondent
