MEN’S BASKETBALL University A Retains Lead In Men’s Basketball

University’s B team failed to reproduce the splendid form it reached against Y.M.C.A. a week ago when it met its A team in the tenth round of the A grade men’s basketball competition on Saturday.

It opened the scoring, but the upset sensed by so many before the game never eventuated. The B team more than held its own in the second spell. However, it could not bridge the gap it had allowed to open in the first half and finally went down, 37-29. Y.M.CA. started badly against Burnham, only gaining control in the second spell. Its winning margin of 37-26 was a fair indication of the merits of the two. In the third game Old Boys completely dominated the play throughout to win by the widest margin of the day, 5129. A feature of the match was the high scoring of the Old Boys’ centre, A. Hounsell, whose tally of 28 points was the highest in club basketball for many years. Points after 10 rounds are: University A 16, Y.M.C.A. 15, Old Boys 12, Burnham 8. University B 7, Bex 2, Y-Boys 0. Close Game UNIVERSITY A 37: J. Stead 18. M. Askew 7, P. Stigly 6, G. Williams 4, C. Morris 2.

UNIVERSITY B 29: W. Smith 12, W. Centre 6, D. de Lisle 4, J. Riley 4, P. Sharp 2, T. Just 1. Although it did not have the depth of ability that the University A team showed, University B could quite easily have won the match had it been able to capitalise on the opportunities offering. Some simple shots were missed and its play was often scrappy. But when its combination dtd function properly there was little the A side could do about it. There was not 10 points difference in the play of the two sides. University B was unable to use the same combination it used to force a draw against Y.M.C.A. last week and the resulting lack of combination proved a vital factor.

The two most prominent players on the court were undoubtedly J. Stead (University A) and W. Smith (University B). Stead was particularly effective under the basket to score 18 points, many of which came from good rebounding. G. Williams moved Impressively for the A team. University A led, 26-16, at half time. Early Lead Lost

Y.M.CJU ST: D. Rattray 14, R. Entwistle 7, C. Walton 8, P. Ross 4, M. Clements 2, A. Riley 2. BURNHAM 26: C. P. Dyson 14, B. Rose 5, G. Ward 3. G. Costello 3.

The Army players showed little respect for reputations in the early stages of their match against the highly favoured Y.M.C.A. side. With half the first spell gone they held a

slight lead and appeared fully in command of the situation. However, it could not last and once Y.M.C.A. went to the front there was no pulling it back. Its team work was considerably superior and its players showed a greater all round knowledge of the fundamental skills.

At half time. Y.M.C.A. led, 1512. The young Y.M.C.A. colt. D.

Rattray, produced his best form this season. He scored freely with a wide variety of shots and for the first time proved to be a key man in Y.M.C.A.’s offensive play. C. P. Dyson was again the dominant figure In the Burnham team, but he was marked closely. Unfortunately, he was fouled off the court in the closing stages—a rare experience for him. Rex Overwhelmed OLD BOYS 51: A. Hounsell 28, G. Orchard 12, S. Hunt 4, M. Gleason 3. K. Milligan 2. P. Bell 2. REX 29: N. Saunders 10. M. Allison 6, P. Ward 5, J. McEvoy 4, D. Verey 2, P. Foster 2. Old Boys were in command right from the opening whistle and never looked like being challenged. They led, 21-8. at half-time, and although Rex improved considerably in the second spell there was still only one team In it. A. Hounsell had a field day at centre for Old Boys. He was given plenty of ball and mostly made the best use of it. G. Orchard was also most effective. N. Saunders controlled his play well for Rex. Other results: Senior Reserve.—Burnham B 50, Rex B 33; L.D.S. 31, Y.M.C.A. B 29. C Grade.—Burnsco 35. Deaf Boys 34; Y-Boys C 25, N.A.C. 17! Hagley 39, Stars 26: Taxes 36, Toe H 20; University C 35, Wigram 34.
