POWERFUL INJURED

“The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. The well-performed steeplechaser, Powerful, is under a cloud and will not start in the Gaisford Steeplechase at the Woodville meeting at Awapuni on Saturday. Powerful has tendon trouble and his connexions fear that it could keep him off the scene this winter. Powerful has a filling in a leg and the swelling is so pronounced that it has been difficult to assess the extent of the damage. He will be given salt water treatment at Foxton beach this week in an endeavour to subside the swelling and so get to the root of the trouble. As it stands now, things do not look too bright for him. Wet ground hampered trialists yesterday, rain having fallen for most of the night. It was against the Nelson candidate, Golden Prince, which ran seven furlongs, the last five with Plantation, which finished ahead. Golden Prince took lmin 38 l-ssec for the distance, the last three in 43 l-ssec. Plantation is engaged at Awapuni on -Saturday but will need an improvement in track conditions if he is to have any chance. If he strikes reasonably, good ground at Nelson, Gold-1 en Prince looks sure to be hard to beat.
