Long, Five-Set Struggle (N.Z P A.-Peuter—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG. The Wimbledon tennis champion, R. Emerson, on Saturday became the South African men's singles champion when he beat R. Hewitt, his 2«-year-oid countryman now living in Johannesburg. after a desperate fiveset struggle. Emerson won. S-3. 2-«, 3-S. 4-4. 7-5. It was a game of see sawing fortunes and contrasting tactics In which Emerson's volleying at the net proved the decisive factor.
Hewitt, playing largely from the baseline. kept passing Emerson with superb ground shots, both forehand and back hand, and threw the Wimbledon champion completely off balance for most of the match.
The match itse-lf lasted two hours five minutes and the out come remained In doubt until the eleventh game of the final set when Emerson applied the pressure, and serving unstoppable balls and volleying devastatingly, took the set, 7-5.
